SCENE STUDY
with Caymichael Patten
For those with previous training and experience. Students work every time on a scene assigned by Ms. Patten and bring it in at different stages of rehearsal. You'll also be investigating the use of the self, what you're "right" for, how to "stay with" yourself-particularly helpful if you too easily lose your own impulses. Once you have your own truth, you can begin to find someone else's. Learn how to break down a scene organically, progress beat to beat through the given circumstances, and know what it is for the event of the scene to occur "for real for real." Solidify your interpretation and put your thumb print on the part.

ACTING/DIRECTING LAB
with Caymichael Patten
I'm very excited about this new class that I have been developing the last few months in what used to be Scene Study 2, which meets on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. We have room for two young directors to be mentored. I assign a scene to actors and director, they rehearse on their own and then bring a rehearsal into class, where I can oversee their progress and give notes to all the parties involved. It's turned into a highly productive situation for the actor, who learns how to work with a director, and the directors, who can work with actors at different levels. Actors and directors at the intermediate level work twice a week; those a bit more advanced work once a week on Fridays only.
If you want to take your work from the classroom to the rehearsal hall, if you need practice with more stylish material or learning how to negotiate in rehearsal, here's your chance.

FRIDAYS 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm

SPECIAL CLASSES
AUDITION
with Caymichael Patten and featuring Marilyn Glasser
Caymichael Patten has taught her Audition Class for more than thirty years; hundreds of actors have taken it, have changed the way they see themselves in the business, and have gotten work. She has found in Marilyn Glasser, a like-minded and equally experienced member of the profession who has also had great success in the same area, with particular emphasis on auditioning in front of the camera. The two have teamed up to create a new version of The Audition Class.
Learn techniques which allow you to get and stay connected to the material as deeply and as quickly as possible; learn about the relationship between the way you see yourself in the business and the way you perform in the audition. Get an assessment of your skills, what you’re right for and a prescription for what you need to do next from two of the industry’s most experienced and straightforward professionals. Get out of your own way and get work. Learn specific tools for auditioning in front of the camera. Students will work up to three times on each class as the following three areas are covered in each session:
1. BUSINESS AND INTERVIEWS. Students are asked to keep a journal of their interviews and auditions. This journal is written up in a specific format, which is altered as the individual progresses. The entries are read aloud in class. The student gets notes and suggestions for changes in the format which will improve his or her performance in a given area. We do exercises to help the student give a better interview. The “business” aspect is discussed in each class and we devote an entire class to it towards the end of the session.
2. THE TEXT. The student learns a method for handling the text that gets him or her deeply engaged quickly, emphasizes making the scene work and helps them organize their thinking and their time. This method is progressive, involving a number of steps, one to be added when the former has been accomplished. Sides are handed out and the student works the featured step as homework; then the scene is brought to class and auditioned. Notes are given. When these steps have been mastered, they constitute a Cold Reading Technique. Then students will be given sides to be done as cold readings in class from plays, screenplays, one hour dramas, soaps and sitcoms. Some camera scenes will be shot in class and made available for the student to view online.
3. THE MONOLOGUE. Time is reserved for monologue work during each class. The student brings the monologue as if to rehearsal; Ms. Patten will give direction and guide the actor through his or her progress with the piece. Ambitious students can leave the class with more than one piece in “sterling shape.”

Meets once a week (10 WEEK SESSION)

BODY DYNAMICS
with Carol Reynolds
Body Dynamics™ works with the body's muscular defense system in an organized, practical approach to body awareness. It is designed to free the actor's body to its full range of emotional experience. You will work to identify and remove chronic muscular tension and learn the tools to free your body so that it becomes your friend and not your enemy. The work in class helps promote the flow of energy throughout the body, allowing more freedom, and strengthens the connection between emotions, thoughts and physical expression. This work changes how you view yourself and move through the world. This 12-week structure is cumulative and requires that material missed be made up in a private session with a teaching assistant at the student's expense.
FRIDAYS - 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm
Meets once a week (12 WEEK SESSION)
September 24th - December 17th, 2010

VOCAL PRODUCTION
with Emily Caigan
Learn a warm up for your voice that will enable you to connect with your breathing, release your resonance without straining, and center yourself. Active listening is also a part of this technique, a process wherein you practice your connection to other actors and to your environment through your breathing.
The warm-up consists of physical exercises for the vocal chords and muscles that are used to produce sound and articulation. This combination will provide you with power and flexibility, range and specificity, but most importantly with an authentic sound.
This class is designed for students who are new to Chuck Jones' Vocal Technique AND those who are familiar, but are out of practice. If you have taken Emily's class in the past and are looking to brush up on your vocal warm up skills, we highly recommend taking the class again, as new ideas and approaches to the technique are sure to emerge.
Chuck Jones Vocal Production was created by Jones as a technique that empowers the actor to become his or her own teacher. The exercises you will learn become part of your craft. They were designed by Jones in the 1970's and are based upon the work of renowned English voice teacher Iris Warren. Caigan trained as a teacher of this technique with Jones in 1994 and has been teaching it for the past 15 years at NYU, Skidmore College, SUNY New Paltz and Michael Howard Studios. She is delighted to return to the Caymichael Patten Studio.

We cover on camera technology, commercials, sitcoms, and night time dramas. We'll view dailies, on camera auditions, and actor reels. This class is rarely offered, so if you are thinking about taking the class, now is the time. Students work every time and class size is limited to 10 people. Admission is by interview.
